So often overlooked and unfashionable, dinner/tea services and a Victorian vase were star lots at Wokingham Auctions’ Silver, Jewellery, Watches & Collectibles Timed Online sale on October 31st.
As Wokingham Town Hall was again unavailable to stage our autumn sale due to current social distancing restrictions the Timed Online format once again proved popular with buyers. The novel Buy-It-Now option seemed to attract non-regular auctions bidders seeking a speedier transaction aided by our online payment system and in-house shipping service, so an item with a guide price of £400-800 could be snapped up for £800. A rare Art Deco Aynsley 21-piece lemon butterfly-handle tea set, pattern B1206 with slight damage to the milk jug handle sold for £1,2750. Wokingham Auction sold an identical set in August 2017 for £847 to a South Korean buyer, but this time the set was won by a collector from Leeds.
Equally sought after was a seventy-two piece Wedgwood ‘Travel’ pattern part-dinner service in Windsor Grey designed by Eric Ravilious depicting different modes of transport and was initially considered as the design for official tableware for the New Zealand Shipping Line. With a few chips to cups and tureens it came with a guide price of £500-1000, selling eventually to the trade for £2000.
The Barlow name is synonymous with Doulton Lambeth pottery, so when a sgrafitto vase (without any visible damage or repair) from the 1890’s emerges from a local house clearance with signed initials of sisters Florence and Hannah, collectors will compete and in this case all the way to the winning bid of £2,000.
